Guelaguetza es una palabra en lengua zapoteca que significa "ofrenda" o "presente". En una forma amplia, es un acto generoso de dar, cuando la ocasión se presenta, y que siempre será correspondido por aquel que recibió. La Guelaguetza comprende una celebración tradicional en Oaxaca, en donde las ocho regiones del estado ofrecen al mundo sus vestimentas, bailes, tradiciones y productos de cada región:
- Los Valles Centrales
- La Sierra Juárez (Norte)
- La Cañada
- Tuxtepec
- La Mixteca
- La Costa
- La Sierra Sur
- y el Istmo de Tehuantepec
Constituye un acontecimiento en el que participa todo el pueblo, sin distinción de estatus social. Cada delegación presenta una muestra de su patrimonio cultural a través de bailes que ejecutan al son de la música y los cantos que les son propios, vistiendo indumentaria de gala de sus respectivos pueblos. Al terminar, cada grupo distribuye entre el público su "Guelaguetza" compuesta por objetos característicos de sus respectivas regiones.
La Guelaguetza de los lunes del cerro se festeja los dos lunes siguientes al 16 de julio, en algunas ocasiones se realiza el segundo y tercer lunes después del 16, esto porque es el aniversario luctuoso de Benito Juárez. La Guelaguetza dura dos días, pero durante nuestro Simposio tendremos una representación breve como muestra a nuestros visitantes de las tradiciones Oaxaqueñas. Guelaguetza is a word in Zapotec language that means "offering" or "present". In it's broad context, it refers to a generous act of giving whenever needed, which will always be corresponded by the one that received. Guelaguetza is a traditional celebration in Oaxaca, where the eight regions of the State offer to the world their dances, dresses, traditions and products of each region:
- The Central Valleys
- Sierra Juárez (in the North)
- La Cañada
- Tuxtepec
- La Mixteca
- The Coast
- Sierra Sur (in the South)
- and Tehuantepec Isthmus
It is a major event in which everybody participates, without distinction of social status. Each delegation presents a sample of their cultural heritage through dances, music and singing, dressing the traditional gala clothes of their respective towns. At the end, each group distributes among the audience the "Guelaguetza", offering composed of products and objects characteristic of each region.
Guelaguetza or "Mondays on the Hill" is celebrated during the two mondays following July 16th; sometimes during the second and third mondays after the 16th because it's the anniversary of the passing of President Benito Juarez, native of Oaxaca. The Guelaguetza lasts two days, but during our Symposium we will have a brief representation as a sample for our guests of the Oaxacan traditions.
